From Nuts to Subversives

Two items, seemingly unrelated, but that I sense really are related.

First, the Pork Association has gone after, of all things, a proponent of breast feeding.

I tend to assume that large organizations have more important things to worry about than “alternative” milk producers. I guess I should know better, having seen the Michigan and Ohio agriculture departments go after tiny producers of raw milk.

Now I know absolutely for sure that, in terms of agribusiness protecting its turf, anything is possible.

The National Pork Board had its law firm write a breast-feeding blogger objecting to a t-shirt it put out, “The other white milk.” Seems the Board felt the saying was too similar to the Pork Board’s trademarked ditty for pork: “The other white meat.”

Why would the pork board care about something so miniscule? Well, as the blogger points out, it’s not that difficult to monitor web sites and blogs, and email out a form-based warning letter. I think there is more to it, though. These people have become respectful of the Internet’s power to launch trends, and products. So they don’t want to take any chances on any “threat” getting going.

That brings me to my second item. I read a letter to the editor published in a Kentucky newspaper, by a retired professor of nutrition and food science at Penn State University. What’s especially striking is his reference to raw milk proponents as “ a group that consists of anti-government, anti-technology, anti-business radicals who use feelings and testimonials to make their decisions.” Remember, this is coming from someone who spent many years in academia.

Like a number of such raw-milk opponents whose diatribes I have heard or read, he admits that he grew up on raw milk. Good enough for him, but not for the rest of society.

To those who say, “They’re watching us,” you may well be right. And the reason they’re watching is because they view people who aren’t enamored of the agribusiness system as subversives.

What is so terrific about the "Raw Milk is Poison" article, is all of the rebuttals below it. 23 people and counting. I love it!

I thought I would claim the title subversive proudly but after looking up the meaning, I'd rather not. First, it requires some secrecy. Nope, not on this side of the battle. The other side is far more secretive. Overthrowing an existing belief or understanding? Again, not this camp. In the food world we're the ones being subverted and overtaken and forced into a new system with scorn for the traditional way of doing things (backed by about 10,000 years of agricultural practices).

To build on my previous post, my small experience in this raw milk arena is that the interest in raw milk comes first, the radicalizing later when you realize this lovely good thing is under attack and suspicion, and apparently also name calling. Suddenly we start wondering about how else the government is "protecting" us. Many in our group are considering ideas and concepts new to them, and our families and friends are hearing about it too.

In our case, the irony is that our farmer thought that since we were Ann Arbor people we'd be too radical for him. And we considered that he might be too conservative for us. He has found that he likes some Ann Arbor liberals, and we've grown fond of him and listen to his more conservative views. A good thing, we've moved out of our comfort zone and found real connections and larger meaning with relationship.

And for the record, I very much support government. I just require that in turn for my support there is transperency, equal access, justice for all, long term vision and protection of the people and the environment, and that no one person or corporation has undue influence.

They have even named the most virulent strain of this superbug USA300.Everyone should be learning about this threat.32% of hog confinement workers have acquired this bug from the hogs and are spreading it to people they have contact with in the community.

When we attended the NIAA's ID Expo in Kansas City last year, Dore Mobely had a power point presentation about opinions of the antiNAIS crowd in the blogosphere. They called us the "extreme opposition".

I wish I had told one of them that I am a raw milk drinker. That would have confirmed my subversiveness.

The good profeesor seems to have quite a bit of emotion in his letter to the editor, of course many of us are emotional over these issues as our livelihood is at risk.
